What Should I Expect in My First Therapy Session?

What Should I Expect in My First Therapy Session?

Starting therapy can feel exciting—and a little intimidating. If you’ve never been to counseling before, it’s normal to wonder what your first session will be like.

The good news? You don’t have to show up “fixed,” have it all figured out, or say anything perfectly. Your first therapy session is simply a safe space to start.

Here’s what you can expect.

1. Paperwork & Privacy First

Before your session starts, you’ll fill out intake paperwork. We will have you do this digitally through a HIPAA compliant platform. This allows us to save time at our first session and also have some information to get started. This typically includes:

  • Contact info

  • Consent forms

  • Privacy policies (HIPAA)

  • A brief questionnaire about what brings you in

2. You Set the Pace

Your therapist will welcome you, explain how sessions work, and invite you to share what brought you in. But there’s no pressure to unload everything at once.

You can talk as much—or as little—as you want. Some people jump right in. Others take time to warm up. Either way is completely okay.

3. Questions, Not Judgments

Your counselor will typically ask a lot of questions. We aren’t trying to pry we are just trying to get enough information so that we can help you set goals and begin your journey to improvement. You won't be judged or analyzed—you’ll be listened to and supported.

4. You Don’t Have to Have the Right Words

Some people worry, “What if I don’t know what to say?”—but that’s part of the process. Your therapist is there to guide the conversation, not wait for you to perform. You’re not expected to have answers. That’s why you're in therapy.

5. It’s Okay to Feel… A Lot

You might leave your first session feeling lighter. Or emotional. Or even unsure. All of that is valid. Therapy often opens doors you’ve kept shut—and that’s a sign it’s working. The first session is just the beginning of something healing and empowering.
